Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political apathy, which refers to the lack of interest or indifference towards political processes, has been identified as a significant factor affecting voter turnout in many democracies. In Dala LGA, Kano State, low voter turnout during elections has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the democratic process. Political apathy, particularly among young voters and marginalized groups, can undermine the legitimacy of elections and hinder the development of a vibrant democratic culture. Apathy can stem from various factors, including dissatisfaction with political leadership, lack of trust in the electoral system, and a sense of disconnection from the political process (Abubakar & Nasir, 2024). This study seeks to explore the relationship between political apathy and voter turnout in Dala LGA, assessing how apathy contributes to low participation in elections and its subsequent effects on electoral outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Dala LGA, low voter turnout has been a recurring issue during elections, raising questions about the underlying causes and the consequences for electoral outcomes. Political apathy is often cited as one of the key contributors to this low engagement. However, the specific impact of political apathy on electoral outcomes in Dala LGA has not been adequately explored. This study aims to investigate how political apathy influences voter behavior and how it ultimately affects the results of local elections, particularly in relation to party dominance and candidate selection.
